Falling Behind....?

So I am 4 full weeks into this thing. This past week traveling to Memphis hurt a little. Yes I had the treadmill at the hotel workout room, but the workout room didn't have a day care. Oh well. There is still plenty of time. We left a sunny and 50 degree day in Memphis on Wednesday to come home to a snowy and 30 degree Indy.

So at the 4 week mark. I'm averaging 17.6 miles per week. That's not good! I have a weekend ahead of me to finish off the month strong.

Day 26, 01/26/10, no run, 0 miles
Day 27, 01/27/10, no run, 0 miles
Day 28, 01/28/10, snowy and cold, treadmill, 3 miles
Day 29, 01/29/10, cold, treadmill, 3 miles

73.5 miles down…926.5 more to go.

Busy Week!

Well the move to Memphis appears to be getting closer. As I write this we are in Memphis looking for a home to rent since we have yet to sell our house in Memphis. Last week in Indianapolis was a busy week getting our house ready for our trip by painting the wood paneling in my office which takes significantly longer they you would expect (Caulk, Primer, Paint, Paint again). So my running last week was a little sporadic. Thank goodness for the long run to start the week. Then a couple runs on the treadmill because I put my daughter in the children's room at the gym. Then couple days off for painting and thus to tired to run. Then a 6 mile run on Friday.

Now in Memphis its been hectic staying in a hotel, looking at houses all day, spending time with friends in the evening and then running on the treadmill at night.

Long Runs … Lower Motivation?

So my last couple runs have been outside.  The temperature in Indianapolis has been at or above freezing for the past few days so I did a quick 3 mile run outside on on the 14th.  I decided to take the Friday January 15th off to do a long run on Saturday.  So on Saturday I met with a client at 9:00 and then hit the Monon Trail.  I was figuring I would do about 6 miles.  3 out and then 3 back.  I was all bundled up with 3 layers and a hat.  I was going at about a 10 minute pace and when I hit my 3 miles out I felt pretty good so I decided to go 4 miles out.  Thus I had 4 miles back.  I did run out of gas but I just slowed down I also walked a little bit but in the end 8 miles were completed.

Thus I started looking at 8 miles and then I’m start telling myself I only have to run 4 more 3 mile runs or 3 more mile runs.  I have to stay steady though.  I did take off Sunday but I figure after doing 8 miles that was needed.  So I will run again today, but how far?  We’ll see.

Day 14, 01/14/10, sunny snow is almost gone, outside run, 3 miles

The Sun Will Come Out …Tomorrow

Well it actually came out today.  There is still snow covering all sidewalks so its still treadmill running for yesterday and today.  The outlook is good though.  The temperature is suppose to come up to or rise above freezing so that’s exciting.

Running on the treadmill is getting tedious.  Tried some different things and figured they just don’t work.  I tried going slower today.  I usually walk for a minute and then go right to running around 6.3 mph and today I started at 5.8 mph for 5 minutes with the idea to then go up to 6.4 for the rest of the 3 miles.  It didn’t work for me.  Just wasn’t comfortable adjusting my stride this much on a treadmill.  My left foot also started hurting somewhat.  The pain could be because I ran one of my fastest 3 miles yesterday in 28 minutes.

I also have been running with a hat for the last couple days and today I did not.  I sweat profusely though and it becomes annoying having to wipe the sweat off my face all the time.  So note to self.  “Always wear a hat”.

Day 11, 01/11/10, cold and snowy, treadmill run, 3 miles, 28 minutes
Day 12, 01/12/10, getting better outside, treadmill run, 3 miles, 30 minutes

Still Cold Outside

Well the snow hasn’t gone anywhere and the sub freezing temperatures seem to be hanging around for a while.  So I continue to run on the treadmill, but to make the most of it I have decided to bump up my speed so I can get done faster.  Then instead of getting done faster I just added a half mile to my runs.  I felt good running after taking the one day off to celebrate the National Championship game on January 7th.  Did I mention that the Crimson Tide won there 13th national championship?.  I believe people at the gym are probably sick of seeing the guy with Alabama stuff on everyday.  Oh well.

First blizzard of 2010

Well the snow started yesterday.  Another 3 miles on a treadmill.  I hate the treadmill.

Today is January 7th though.  The day Alabama plays in Pasadena for what I hope to be its 13th national championship.  We have about 6 inches of fresh powder on the ground today.  So needless to say I’m not running outside and the snow is making it hard to even go to the gym.  So today is my first off day.

Day 6, 01/06/10, cold and snowy, treadmill run, 3 miles
Day 7, 01/07/10, colder and snowier, no run, 0 miles

More Treadmill running

It has been absolutely freezing across the United States in recent days.  Our friends in Memphis and my family in southern Alabama have been experiencing temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s while here in central Indiana I woke up the last two morning to single digit temperatures.  Thus running outside is not an option for me.

So back to the Windemere Cardinal Fitness for my daily treadmill runs.

Day 4, 01/04/10, cold outside, treadmill run, 3 miles
Day 5, 01/05/10, cold and snowy, treadmill run, 3 miles

16 miles down…984 more to go.

1000 miles in 365 days

For 2010 I have set a long term goal of running 1000 miles over the next 365 days.

At first you think that's just 3 miles a day. Or you think that's 20 miles a week. Either way that takes more dedication than say training for a half marathon for a couple months prior to the race. Its a change to how you plan your day like brushing your teeth or taking a shower.

Granted I'm not necessarily going to run 3 miles every day. Take my first day, January 1st, 2010, I ran 4 miles in 19 degree weather. I will also run a couple half marathons and maybe my first full marathon during the year.

I will try to run outside as much as possible just because I absolutely hate running on a treadmill. I will however run on the treadmill if I have to. Typically that will be because the temperature outside is below 20 degrees or its snowing or its icey or its raining cats and dogs.

When I run outside I don't have a GPS or a pedometer, but if I don't know the exact mileage, I'm a pretty consistent 10 minute miler. I will round down to the nearest half mile. For example if I run a 5K race, it will only count as 3 miles.

So here I am
Day 1, 19 degrees sunny, outside run, 4 miles
Day 2, 10 degrees sunny, treadmill, 3 miles
Day 3, 19 degrees sunny, outside run, 3 miles

Stay tuned for daily logs
